On August, 2017, NIST announces an update to their National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Cybersecurity Workforce Framework on their SP 800-181 (http://nvlpubs.nist.gov/nistpubs/SpecialPublications/NIST.SP.800-181.pdf) to bring some kind of common language on the skills needed by cybersecurity professionals to meet the needs of the market place with the 7 categories, 33 specialty areas, and 52 work roles.
While reading the NICE special publication came to mind the correlation of the fact that actual performance based Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required by the Information Systems Technician (IT) Navy Enlisted Rating career path had being addressing for a long time the same cyber security needs internally within the US Navy IT security organizational operational environment.
The Navy IT on the merit of Information Assurance, Information Security, and Cyber-Security as a professional practitioner is based on superior constant Operational Security performance and have on this area over 30 years of professionalization above the recent market place attention boom towards the IT security arena. For the Navy IT Rate organization aligning billets or position descriptions to ensure securing our data assets on a constant fluctuating operational risk is and has been our daily mission-goal-objective and concern for decades.
